Lead in kids toys!  BPA in food packaging!  Baby Wipes that contain:

• 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol (or Bronopol) – Allergen and irritant that can form cancer-causing contaminants
• DMDM Hydantoin – Allergen and irritant that can form cancer-causing contaminants

It is impossible to avoid dangerously toxic chemicals unless you seal yourself up in a plastic bubble, BPA free of course.  It’s also  impossible to know what your buying when the FDA , EPA and other regulatory bodies do not enforece the same labeling regulations on cosmetics, toys and other products that are enforced on the food industry.   If we knew what was in our favorite products, we might stop using them all together.

Well, now we CAN know.  The Environmental Working Group’s website www.ewg.org is a site that can give a comprehensive breakdown on what’s in your favorite daily products and what you might need to be concerned about.   For each product, there is a clear and easy breakdown of the items ingredients and an explanation of the toxins and how they effect you and your loved ones.

What’s great about this site is that it’s not just informative, it’s active.  Information can also be found on past and current legislation geared towards phasing out toxins, chemicals and pollutants in our environment, products and food.  Additionally, if you want to get active, there are petitions to sign to force regulators to take action and ways to donate to further the debate.

Reducing the amount of toxins in our bodies is one of the most important ways we can all take charge of our health.   Please join the fight to force congress to make chemicals in consumer products, KID SAFE.

So, good muslim girl (my wife) and I were talking. Talking about dumb sayings. We were watching Dora the Explorer, a children’s television show. Dora was wishing on a star. So I started to think about this saying. I find it bizarre and ignorant that people would actually do this in real life. Who came up with this? In modern times, clearly most people know better than worshiping idols such as physical statues. How is wishing on a star any different? Why would any sane adult actually do this? I understand longing for something. As Muslims, of course we make Dua’a. But longing for something and actually wasting the energy to really seek out a star and make a wish is totally confounding to me. What do you think about this? Let’s see if GMG ever lets me write one of these again.

In this case, it is artist Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang.  From his website www.hajinoordeen.com, he is describe as  “a renowned master of Arabic calligraphy. Born in 1963 in Shangdong province, China, he brings an immense learning in traditional thought and Islamic art to a modern audience, juxtaposing them in a new calligraphic style all his own, both Eastern and Western.”

His innovative style is a complementary mixture of Arabic and Chinese calligraphy.  Styles which were once thought to be opposites.   His pieces are extraordinary and come in either large scroll form or as smaller framed art pieces all at varying price points.

In 1997,  Noor Deen was the first Chinese Muslim to be awarded the Egyptian Certificate of Arabic Calligraphy and to be admitted as a member of the Association of Egyptian Calligraphy.

Noor Deen’s mastery has brought lecture invitations from Havard, Cambridge and many other note worthy institutions.  However, accolades aside, I think his work speaks for itself.

As I have stated before. We are constantly looking for great products to bring to our customers.
